What UTM, fbclid and gclid are

Parameters after the question mark

A URL can carry parameters that change content or are used for measurement and attribution. UTM parameters commonly indicate campaign, source or medium. Other identifiers such as fbclid or gclid are added in certain advertising flows.

Not every parameter is tracking

Removing parameters indiscriminately can break a search, filter, specific page or invitation link. That is why this site uses a conservative list of known parameters and does not remove generic parameter names by default.

Check the destination

The cleaner can also extract the destination from some known redirect wrappers, but it avoids removing functional parameters when it cannot justify doing so. Even so, it is good practice to open the result and confirm it goes to the expected destination before publishing or sending it.

Practical example: what gets removed and what stays

Imagine receiving a product link like this. The example.com family of domains is reserved for examples and does not identify a real shop.

https://example.com/producto?page=2&utm_source=boletin&fbclid=ejemplo

Here, the cleaner removes utm_source and fbclid but keeps page=2, which may control which product-list page appears. The result is:

https://example.com/producto?page=2

Three checks before sharing

  1. Check that the resulting domain is the one you intended to visit. A tracking parameter is not the same as a deceptive domain.
  2. If the link opens a search, cart or invitation, keep the functional parameters.
  3. If an address is unknown or suspicious, cleaning it does not make it safe. Do not enter passwords or payment details without checking the site.
