Calculate SHA-256 or SHA-512 for a file
Calculate SHA-256 or SHA-512 in chunks in a Web Worker, with progress, cancellation, multiple files and optional expected-hash comparison.
Choose a file
The file is read locally to calculate its hash.
Features
SHA-256
Widely used algorithm for integrity verification.
SHA-512
512-bit alternative calculated in chunks in a local Web Worker.
Any format
It does not depend on the file extension or format. The file is read in chunks so it does not have to be loaded fully into memory.
What a hash is for
If two copies of the same file produce exactly the same hash with the same algorithm, that is strong evidence that their binary content matches. A hash does not encrypt the file and cannot be reversed to recover it.
Frequently asked questions
Which files are supported?
Any format is supported. Bytes are processed in chunks; the practical limit depends on the browser, device and processing time.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The file is processed in chunks in a Web Worker inside the browser.
